PROTEC (Programme for Technological Careers) is a four-year supplementary programme (Grades 9-12) for scholars showing above average skills in mathematics and science. Pupils participate in 30 days of Saturday school each year, as well as vacation school activities, work experience programmes, site visits, and life skills training.
The aim is to help these students obtain the best Grade 12 results possible so that they can gain access to top tertiary study facilities and ultimately enter South Africa’s workforce as technologically skilled professionals.
JG Afrika has been a donor of the PROTEC Pietermaritzburg Academy since 2004 and has taken a keen interest in promoting civil engineering as a profession of choice to these academically astute students. To strengthen these efforts the firm has provided mentorship, holiday work and visits to construction sites.
PROTEC PMB has an excellent record: a 100% Grade 12 pass-rate, with university endorsement rate of above 95%, for the past five years. In 2010 the top student obtained seven distinctions and achieved 100% in both mathematics and physical science, and was the top student in KwaZulu-Natal in those subjects.
