At JG Afrika we are very aware of our responsibility to invest in and support the communities within which we operate, and JG Afrika is quick to offer assistance in the form of time, expertise and funding to help worthy causes. Some examples are:
Alexandra Health Centre serves an impoverished community of about 400 000 people crammed into an area of just one square mile, in the Alexandra township, Johannesburg. The services provided include antenatal and postnatal care, growth monitoring and immunisation, family planning and outreach services in occupational and school health. JG Afrika provided both the funding and professional servicesto erect two guard houses, one each at the Westgate and Arkwright entrances.
Kensington Crèche, Shawco Centre, is a non-profit organisation in Kensington, Cape Town, which provides early childhood education for 100 children aged between two and a half and six years. Parents pay a nominal fee for the education and meals that their children receive. JG Afrika provided the funding for the expansion and refitting of a classroom for the youngest children and the upgrading of the staff room.
The Clouds of Hope Orphanage at Underberg in the Drakensberg is a place of refuge for children who have lost their parents and relatives due to AIDS. Such is the extent of the problem in this rural area that it became necessary for the orphanage to build ten three-bedroomed cottages on its premises to accommodate a further 80 children and eight care-givers. Fortunately an overseas donor was found to fund the construction and JG Afrika donated its services i.r.o. the required geotechnical and environmental impact assessments. JG Afrika staff also got directly involved by donating clothing, bedding, educational material and computers.
There are times when goods are needed more than services, and this was the case with Katlego Ka Tshepo, a non-profit organisation based in Springs, near Johannesburg, which cares for the orphaned, vulnerable and destitute children of the Payneville area. JG Afrika funded school uniforms for 102 children, a full park jungle gym, tables and chairs for the dining area, and mattresses.
